Patriotism v Nationalism

Is the United States of America the best country in the world? If the world voted, we would probably be considered one of the worst. Is the world wrong? Hmmm. Let's question Patriotism . . .

Is Patriotism always a good thing? Does Patriotism necessarily mean that we value the lives of "Americans" more than the lives of foreigners? What is the difference between Patriotism and Nationalism? Does sitting down during the Pledge of Allegiance indicate a lack of Patriotism? Finally, how does 1984 inform this question? For example, is there a potential parallel between our saying the pledge and the two minutes of hate or is my even suggesting that somehow "sacriligious"?

By the way, I should not be posting. Posters need to step up.

Class Discussion

Prompt One

What was your take on the future in class? In your rendition of the future, would it make any difference if you changed the year from 2042, to 2100? If so, explain the changes.

Prompt Two

How are you all handling the stress of applying to colleges. If you aren't feeling any stress then why not? I know some people have cheated and applied early and all that... does anyone know if they have been accepted anywhere, or even where they are definately going yet? How does it feel to be done with all the paperwork(for now)?

Your own prophecy...

In Oedipus the King, it seemed that the more he looked into his prophecy the worst things became. If at a stage in your life you were told a prophecy would you look me into it or just ignore it? This ties into the question do u think ignorance is bliss?
